How do you cope with family events and holidays when you're estranged?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating family events and holidays when we're estranged can feel like walking through a minefield, can't it? Many of us dread the season of cheerful gatherings and family traditions that seem to highlight our absence. It can bring up feelings of sadness, loneliness, and sometimes even guilt. But we’re not alone in this, and there are ways we can cope that make these times a bit more bearable. One thing that has helped me is creating my own traditions. It can be as simple as cooking a favorite meal or taking a day to relax and do something I love, like binge-watching a series or going for a hike. By focusing on what makes me happy, I can reclaim some joy during a time that might otherwise feel heavy. It’s a way to celebrate myself, even when family isn’t part of the picture. Another approach some of us find helpful is connecting with friends who understand what we're going through. Many of us have found solace in sharing our experiences with others in similar situations. It could be as casual as inviting a close friend over for a holiday meal or even just chatting over coffee. Having even one person around who gets it can make these days feel less isolating. I remember one holiday when I spent it with a friend who was also estranged from her family – we ended up cooking together and just enjoying each other’s company. It turned out to be one of the best holidays I’ve had! Sometimes, it’s also about setting boundaries. If you feel pressure to attend family gatherings, it’s totally okay to say no. Prioritizing your mental health is crucial, and many of us have had to learn that our well-being comes first. You might find it helpful to plan an alternative activity for yourself, something that feels nurturing and joyful instead of stressful. As we approach these tough times, it can help to remember that we’re not alone in our feelings. Many of us are navigating similar paths. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear what you’ve done to cope during family events and holidays. Your experiences might just help someone else feel a little less alone.
