Some days it feels lighter, and some days the guilt sneaks back in out of nowhere, like it's been waiting for a quiet moment to remind you it's still there. That mix of relief and grief is something I don't think people talk about enough, especially when it comes to a family relationship that just isn't there anymore. There's often this pressure to explain yourself, to justify why the distance exists, and honestly, talking about estrangement without shame is harder than it sounds when so much of the world assumes family should just work itself out.
I think a lot of us are somewhere in the middle of figuring out how to cope with being estranged from family without it swallowing everything else in our lives. For some people it's been time. For others it's therapy, journaling, leaning on friends who feel like chosen family, or just slowly accepting that peace doesn't always mean resolution. It doesn't erase the hard parts, but it makes room for something other than pain to exist alongside it.
