Some days the distance feels normal, and other days it hits out of nowhere, a random memory or a holiday on the calendar and suddenly it's heavy again. I think a lot of us end up here not because we have it all figured out, but because we're still figuring out how to live with it. Being part of an estranged from family support community has made me realize how many people are quietly carrying this same weight, whether it's a parent, a sibling, or someone else, and how differently everyone's story looks even when the ache feels similar.
What I've noticed is that healing after estrangement from family isn't really one big moment, it's more like a bunch of small things that add up over time. For some people that's therapy, for others it's leaning on friends who feel like chosen family, journaling, setting boundaries, or just giving themselves permission to not have a relationship that isn't safe or healthy. There's no single right way to do it, and I don't think anyone here is looking to be told what they should do differently.
