Family gatherings can be tough for many of us, especially when the invitation doesn't come our way or we decide to skip them for our own well-being. It can feel isolating and bring up a whirlwind of emotions, from sadness to anger, and sometimes even relief. Many of us know this struggle all too well.
One way to cope is by creating our own traditions or rituals during the holidays. Instead of focusing on what we're missing out on, we can shift our energy toward what feels good for us. For instance, I started making a special meal on holidays, something that brings me joy. It could be a favorite dish from childhood or something new that I’ve always wanted to try. This small act helps me reclaim the day and fills it with positive energy rather than the weight of absence.
Another approach is to connect with others who understand what we’re going through. If you’re comfortable, reach out to friends or even acquaintances who might also be navigating estrangement or difficult family dynamics. One year, I reached out to a friend who was in a similar situation, and we ended up spending the holiday together. It turned into a day of laughter and shared stories, which made the experience so much lighter. Having someone to celebrate (or commiserate) with can make a huge difference.
It’s also important to acknowledge our feelings during this time. If you find yourself feeling sad or frustrated, allow those emotions to surface. Journaling can be a helpful tool for processing what you’re experiencing. Many of us find that putting pen to paper helps clarify our thoughts and feelings. It’s a way to validate our experiences without judgment.
And let’s not forget the importance of self-care. Whether it's treating yourself to a favorite movie, indulging in a hobby, or just taking a long walk to clear your head, find what rejuvenates you. Self-care looks different for everyone, so choose what resonates with you.
Anyone else feeling the weight of family gatherings this time of year? It can be tough, but sharing our experiences can lighten the load. What has helped you cope during these times?
