Navigating family events and holidays can feel like walking through a minefield when you're estranged from your family. Many of us know that sense of dread that creeps in as the holidays approach, with all those cheerful family gatherings that no longer feel like they belong to us. It’s tough, right? The pressure to conform to societal expectations while feeling like an outsider can be overwhelming.
One thing that really helped me was creating my own traditions. Instead of focusing on what I'm missing out on, I started to embrace what I enjoy. Whether it’s inviting friends over for a cozy dinner or treating myself to a solo movie marathon, having something to look forward to can shift the narrative. It feels empowering to carve out my own space and celebrate in a way that feels authentic to me.
Another approach some of us try is to establish a chosen family. This doesn’t mean replacing our biological family, but rather finding those who understand our experiences and support us. I found a couple of friends who are also estranged, and we started a small holiday gathering of our own. It’s a space where we can laugh, share our stories, and just be ourselves without judgment, which makes even the hardest days feel a little lighter.
And let’s be honest — it’s okay to feel sad about the estrangement, especially during family-centric times. Acknowledging those feelings can be a powerful step. I sometimes let myself have a good cry or write down my thoughts. This helps me process what I'm going through rather than bottling it up. And if you can, reach out to someone who understands. Just having one person to talk to about what we’re feeling can make all the difference.
Anyone else dealing with this during the holidays? I would love to hear what you do to cope or any new traditions you’ve created. Sharing our experiences can really help lighten the load.
