How do you cope with the guilt of being estranged from family during holidays?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Holidays can be a bittersweet time for many of us who are estranged from our families. While the world around us is filled with festive cheer and family gatherings, we might find ourselves grappling with feelings of guilt, loneliness, and even shame. It can be tough to navigate these emotions, especially when it seems like everyone else is enjoying time with loved ones. One thing that has helped me cope is creating my own holiday traditions. This can be anything from cooking a special meal that brings you joy to binge-watching your favorite comfort shows. I remember one year, I decided to treat myself to a cozy movie marathon, complete with all my favorite snacks. It felt empowering to take control of how I spent that time, rather than feeling like a bystander to someone else's joy. Another approach some of us find helpful is connecting with others who understand what we're going through. I reached out to a few friends who are also estranged from their families, and we decided to host a "Friendsgiving" instead. Sharing our stories and laughter made the day feel special, and it reminded me that we can create our own chosen family. Even if it’s just one person who gets it, having that connection can make all the difference. You might also find it beneficial to acknowledge your feelings instead of pushing them away. It’s okay to feel sad or guilty about being estranged. Journaling can be a powerful outlet; writing down your thoughts and feelings can help clarify what you’re experiencing. I often find that when I put my emotions on paper, they feel a little lighter. It’s a step toward acceptance and understanding that our journeys are unique and valid. Anyone else feeling this way during the holidays? It can be comforting to share our experiences — sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything.
