Have you ever felt judged by teachers or colleagues because of your dyslexia? How do you navigate those moments?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us with dyslexia have been there — sitting in a classroom or a meeting, feeling the weight of judgment in the air. It can be so disheartening when teachers or colleagues don’t understand the challenges we face. Their reactions can range from subtle dismissals to outright frustration, and that can leave us feeling isolated and misunderstood. One thing that has helped me navigate those moments is finding ways to communicate my needs. When I’ve felt comfortable enough, I’ve talked to my teachers or coworkers about my dyslexia and how it affects my learning or work style. I often share specific examples, like how I might need extra time on assignments or prefer to use audiobooks. It can feel vulnerable to speak up, but many of us have found that once we do, it opens the door for support and understanding, even if it takes time to build that trust. Another approach some of us have tried is connecting with others who share our experiences. Just having one person in your life who truly gets it can make a world of difference. I remember finding a colleague who also has dyslexia, and we started sharing tips and strategies. We even formed a little support group at work, where we could talk openly about our experiences and brainstorm ways to manage challenges together. Those conversations have not only helped us cope but have also created a sense of camaraderie that eases the pressure. It’s also important to remember that navigating judgment is a process. Some days are better than others. There are moments when the weight of others’ perceptions can be overwhelming, but staying focused on our own strengths can help shift that narrative. We are capable and resilient, and reminding ourselves of that can be empowering. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear how you’ve managed those judgmental moments and if you’ve found connections that have made your journey easier. Your stories matter!
