The frustration of feeling misunderstood in academic settings

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the feeling all too well — sitting in a classroom or lecture hall, desperately trying to keep up while the words on the page seem to dance around. It’s frustrating when we know we have ideas and insights to share, but the way information is presented makes it feel like we're constantly a step behind. It’s tough when our dyslexia isn’t understood, and we’re left feeling misunderstood or even overlooked by peers and instructors. One thing that really helped me was finding a group of classmates who understood what I was going through. We started meeting up before exams to compare notes and share study techniques that worked for us. Instead of feeling isolated, I found comfort in our shared experiences. It was eye-opening to hear how others navigated similar frustrations, like struggling with timed tests or needing extra time to process information. Another approach many of us have tried is advocating for ourselves when it comes to accommodations. It’s not always easy, but reaching out to teachers or professors to discuss our needs can make a big difference. Some of us have found that simply explaining how dyslexia affects our learning opened doors to more supportive environments. It can be a little intimidating, but having even one person in our corner — whether it’s an understanding teacher or a supportive friend — can shift the entire experience. And let’s be honest, sometimes it feels like we’re fighting an uphill battle. When we’re in a system that doesn’t always recognize or value our unique ways of processing information, it can be disheartening. But connecting with others who understand these challenges can remind us that we’re not alone. Anyone else feeling this way in school or work? It can really help to share our experiences and strategies. What’s worked for you when it comes to feeling understood in academic settings?
