How do you handle moments when your dyslexia makes you feel embarrassed in social situations?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us with dyslexia have found ourselves in those awkward social moments where our reading or writing struggles become painfully obvious. Maybe it’s reading aloud in a group, or even just trying to spell something correctly in a text. That sinking feeling of embarrassment can be so tough to navigate, but we’re not alone in this. One thing that has helped me is embracing our shared experiences. When I started talking about my dyslexia with friends, I found that many of them had similar stories. It’s amazing how discussing those embarrassing moments can lighten the mood. I remember once I was in a group setting, and I hesitated to read a text. Instead of silently panicking, I shared my struggle with dyslexia. To my surprise, others opened up about their own challenges, and suddenly, what felt isolating became a moment of connection. Another approach some of us try is to prepare for those situations ahead of time. If I know I’ll be in a setting where I might need to read something, I practice a few lines quietly beforehand. It doesn’t eliminate the anxiety entirely, but it gives me a bit of control and a boost of confidence. I’ve also learned to lean on supportive friends who understand my journey. Just having one person in the room who gets it can change everything — they often jump in to help if I stumble, which takes the pressure off. Sometimes, it’s about finding humor in our unique situations. I’ve found that when I can laugh at my own mistakes, it takes away some of the sting. Like that time I accidentally texted “defiantly” instead of “definitely” to a group chat. Instead of being embarrassed, I joked about it, and it turned into a funny memory that we still laugh about. Anyone else dealing with these moments? It can feel isolating, but sharing our experiences can remind us we’re in this together. What’s helped you navigate those embarrassing situations?
