How do you cope with the guilt of not being productive enough on tough days?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that heavy feeling of guilt when we aren’t as productive as we think we should be, especially on tough days. It hangs over us like a cloud, making it even harder to just get through the day. We might feel like we’re letting ourselves down, or worse, that we’re falling behind compared to others who seem to be managing just fine. It can be so isolating, right? One thing that really helps me is reminding myself that it’s okay to have off days. Sometimes, just acknowledging that we’re dealing with a mental health challenge can lift a bit of that guilt. When we’re in a tough spot, simply surviving is a form of productivity. Maybe try journaling about what you're feeling on those days. It’s a way to release some of that pressure, and it can help you see patterns over time, like triggers or moments when you felt a little better. Another approach some of us find useful is to set very small, achievable goals. Instead of aiming to tackle a whole project, we might focus on just one small task, like taking a shower or making a cup of tea. Completing even the tiniest task can give us a little boost and can help shift our mindset. Plus, sharing those small wins with someone who understands can be so validating. I found someone going through the same thing, and we started checking in on each other. Just knowing that someone else gets it made all the difference. It’s also helpful to give ourselves permission to rest. Many of us feel guilty about taking breaks, but we need to remember that rest is an essential part of productivity, especially when we’re managing depression. Sometimes, just stepping away from the pressure and doing something relaxing — like reading a book or listening to music — can recharge our batteries. It’s okay to prioritize our mental health over a to-do list. Anyone else dealing with this guilt? It can feel overwhelming, but sharing our experiences and tips really helps. What’s worked for you on those tough days?
