How do you cope with the stigma of being a returned migrant in your community?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the feeling of returning home after being away, only to find ourselves navigating a web of stigma and misunderstanding. It's tough when you carry the label of "returned migrant," and it feels like the community we once belonged to now views us through a different lens. The isolation can be overwhelming, but we’re not alone in this. One thing that helped me was finding spaces where I could share my story without fear of judgment. Connecting with others who have similar experiences has been a lifeline. I started meeting with a local group of returned migrants, and just knowing that we all have faced the same challenges made it easier to talk about our feelings. We share our struggles — whether it’s dealing with the awkward questions about why we returned or the misconceptions about our journeys. This connection has really helped me feel less isolated. Another approach many of us find useful is reframing our narrative. Instead of seeing our return as a failure, we can celebrate it as a new chapter. I’ve started focusing on the strengths I've gained from my experiences abroad and how they can benefit my community. Sharing these positive aspects with others can sometimes shift their perceptions. It’s a small step, but it helps us reclaim our stories and push back against the stigma. And let's not ignore the tough days. There are moments when the weight of judgment feels heavy, and it's okay to acknowledge that. On those days, reaching out to someone who understands can truly lighten the load. Whether it's a phone call or a chat over coffee, having even one person who gets it can change everything. Anyone else grappling with this? It would be great to hear what’s worked for you in coping with the stigma and finding your place again. Let’s support each other through this journey!
