How do you cope with feelings of shame or stigma after returning home?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Coming back home after being away can be a whirlwind of emotions, and many of us know that feeling all too well. It's like stepping back into a familiar place, but everything seems different — including ourselves. The feelings of shame or stigma can creep in, especially when it feels like we don’t quite fit in anymore. One thing that has helped many of us cope is sharing our experiences with others who understand the unique challenges we face. When we talk openly about our feelings of shame or the judgment we might encounter, it lightens the load. For instance, I found a local group of returned migrants who meet up regularly. Just being in a space where everyone shares similar stories made me realize I wasn’t alone in feeling out of place. You might find that even one person who truly understands your journey can change everything. It’s also useful to remember that the stigma we feel often stems from societal perceptions. One strategy we’ve embraced is reframing our narrative. Instead of thinking about our return as a failure or a setback, we can try to view it as a new chapter filled with potential. Some of us have started journaling about our experiences, focusing on the strengths we’ve gained from our journey. This practice not only helps us process our emotions but also serves as a reminder of how far we’ve come. Another approach is to set small, achievable goals that can help rebuild our sense of belonging. Whether it's reconnecting with friends or participating in community events, these actions can gradually help shift our feelings of shame into a sense of pride. I remember feeling nervous before attending a local gathering, but once I got there, I found others who were just as eager to reconnect and share their stories. Anyone else feeling this way after returning home? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference — what’s your experience been like?
