How do you cope with the guilt of leaving behind loved ones when you were deported?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
It’s hard to put into words the guilt that can come with being deported. Many of us have left behind loved ones, friends, and even our homes, and those feelings often linger long after we’ve arrived somewhere new. It’s a heavy weight to carry, and it’s completely normal to feel a mix of sadness and guilt. One thing that has helped me is finding ways to stay connected with my loved ones, even from afar. Video calls can be a lifeline, allowing us to see each other’s faces and hear each other's voices. I try to schedule weekly calls with my family, and while it’s not the same as being together, it helps ease that feeling of separation. Sometimes, just hearing their laughter can make a heavy day feel a little lighter. Have you found ways to keep in touch that make you feel closer? Another approach some of us have taken is to share our stories with each other. Talking about our experiences with people who understand the complexities of being deported has been a healing experience. I found someone who’s gone through the same thing, and we started chatting regularly. Opening up about our struggles and the guilt we feel has brought a sense of community that I didn’t know I needed. If you can, try to find someone who shares this experience; it can really make a difference. Sometimes, we might also feel the urge to talk about our guilt openly with those we left behind. This can be tough, but expressing our feelings honestly can help us all process the situation together. You might find that your loved ones appreciate your vulnerability and want to support you in whatever way they can. The journey of coping with guilt is ongoing, and we all handle it differently. Anyone else navigating this? What’s helped you cope with the feelings of leaving loved ones behind? Sharing our experiences might just lighten the load a bit.
