How do you cope with the uncertainty of your status affecting your career plans?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Feeling uncertain about our career plans can be overwhelming, especially when our status adds an extra layer of complexity. Many of us in the DACA community know all too well the anxiety that comes with not knowing how policies might change or how our status might affect our opportunities. It can feel like we’re constantly walking a tightrope, trying to balance our dreams with the reality of our situation. One thing that has helped me navigate this uncertainty is focusing on building skills that are marketable, regardless of my immigration status. Taking online courses or attending workshops in my field has not only boosted my confidence but also expanded my network. Connecting with others in these settings has been invaluable. I found a small group of peers who share similar experiences, and we started meeting regularly to share our goals and challenges. This has made a huge difference in feeling less isolated and more supported. Another approach some of us might try is being proactive about our job search. When applying for positions, I’ve found it helpful to research companies that have a history of hiring DACA recipients. This way, I can focus my energy on places that align with my situation. Having that knowledge can ease some of the pressure and help us feel more empowered in our job hunt. It can also be beneficial to stay informed about the latest news regarding DACA and immigration policies. Joining online forums or local advocacy groups can provide resources and updates that keep us in the loop. I remember feeling lost until I found a group that shared real-time updates — it was reassuring to know I wasn't alone and that we could support each other through the changes. Ultimately, it’s about finding ways to stay hopeful and connected. A small chat with a fellow DACA recipient about our career aspirations or even our struggles can lighten the load. Anyone else feeling this uncertainty? How do you cope with the ups and downs of your career plans? Sharing our experiences can really make a difference.
