Navigating the job search as a DACA recipient can feel like a rollercoaster — one minute you're excited about opportunities, and the next you're hit with the reality of barriers that others might not even see. Many of us know that feeling all too well. The uncertainty around our status can create a cloud of anxiety, especially when applying for jobs or even just trying to network.
One challenge I faced was the constant need to explain my situation during interviews. Many employers don’t fully understand DACA or the protections it offers. It can feel exhausting to have to educate them, and sometimes it feels like we're fighting not just for the job, but for our right to exist in that space. I found it helpful to prepare a brief explanation about my DACA status and what it allows me to do — having that ready made me feel more confident going into interviews. It’s not easy, but being upfront can sometimes help.
Another thing that has made a difference for me was connecting with others who share this experience. I started reaching out to people in similar situations, and we formed a little group where we share job leads and support each other. Having even one person who truly understands the unique challenges of being a DACA recipient has been a game changer. We brainstormed ways to tackle tricky questions and even practiced our interview skills together. It made the process feel less isolating.
Many of us also face the fear of being ghosted after interviews or applications. It can be disheartening to put yourself out there and not receive any feedback. One strategy that helped was following up after interviews. I learned it’s okay to express my continued interest and ask for any updates — it not only shows my enthusiasm but sometimes it even prompts a response.
Does anyone else feel the weight of these challenges? Sometimes just talking to someone who gets it makes all the difference — what's your experience with job searching as a DACA recipient? Would love to hear what's helped you along the way.
