How do you navigate relationships when trust has been broken in the past?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling when trust has been shattered, especially after experiencing childhood abuse. It can leave us feeling hesitant and isolated in our relationships, constantly questioning whether we can truly open up to others. Navigating connections when trust has been broken is no easy feat, but there are ways we can support each other through this journey. One thing that’s helped me is taking small steps to rebuild trust with those who demonstrate patience and understanding. Instead of diving headfirst into a deep relationship, I often start with lighter conversations and gradually share more personal experiences as I feel safe. It’s about pacing ourselves, and finding those moments where we feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable. Having even one person who understands this struggle can make a world of difference. I found someone in a similar situation, and we started talking regularly — just knowing that we both carry this weight lightens the load. Another approach some of us try is being open about our boundaries. It’s okay to let people know that trust is something we work on continuously. Sharing our needs, whether it’s needing time alone or asking for reassurance, can foster healthier connections. This way, we can create a space where both sides feel respected and valued. We might also find it helpful to engage in activities that promote connection without the pressure of deep conversation. Group outings or shared hobbies can be a great way to bond while keeping things light. I remember joining a local art class, and the focus on creativity allowed me to interact without the heaviness of past traumas always hanging in the air. Sometimes, just being around others who are also navigating their journeys can spark unexpected friendships. Navigating relationships when trust has been broken can feel daunting, but we can find ways to support one another. Has anyone else been working on rebuilding trust in their relationships? I’d love to hear what’s helped you or any challenges you've faced along the way. Sharing our stories can make this journey a little less lonely.
