How do you handle triggers that come up unexpectedly in daily life?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that unexpected triggers can hit us out of nowhere, often when we least expect it. One moment we might be enjoying a day out or just going about our daily routine, and then something—a sound, a smell, a certain phrase—can pull us right back to a painful memory. It’s frustrating and often feels isolating, doesn’t it? One thing that has helped me is creating a "trigger toolkit." This is a collection of things that I can turn to when I feel overwhelmed. It might include a playlist of calming music, a few grounding exercises, or even a comforting scent like lavender. Having these tools ready can feel like a safety net when those triggers come up. We might also want to jot down a few affirmations or reminders that we can read when we’re feeling triggered, like “I am safe now” or “This feeling will pass.” Another approach some of us try is reaching out to someone who understands what we’re going through. I remember the first time I connected with a fellow survivor, and how just talking about our experiences made it feel a little less heavy. It’s so helpful to share what we’re feeling with someone who gets it, especially when we’re triggered. Even if it’s just a quick message to check in, sometimes that connection can help us feel less alone in those moments. Practicing mindfulness has also been a game changer for many of us. When we feel triggered, taking a moment to breathe deeply and focus on the present can help bring us back. I often try to describe my surroundings to myself or engage my senses—what do I see, hear, feel? This can ground us in the here and now rather than letting our minds spiral back to the past. Anyone else navigating unexpected triggers? It can be tough, but sometimes just sharing our experiences with one another can be a source of strength. What has helped you when those moments arise?
