It's a tough reality that many of us can relate to: certain everyday situations can trigger memories of childhood abuse, pulling us back into moments we’d rather forget. We might be going about our day, and then a smell, a sound, or even a simple phrase brings everything rushing back. It can feel so isolating, and it’s easy to think we’re alone in this.
One thing that often helps is acknowledging these triggers when they arise. For instance, if you’re in a crowded place and the chatter suddenly feels overwhelming, it might remind you of a chaotic time from your past. Taking a moment to breathe and ground yourself can be so important. Many of us find that carrying a small item that feels comforting, like a smooth stone or a piece of fabric, can help remind us of our present and keep us focused.
Another approach some of us try is talking through these experiences with someone who understands. I found someone going through the same thing, and we started sharing our triggers openly; it changed everything. Just having that one connection made the hard days feel a little lighter, knowing that someone else gets it. If you're not ready to share your story, finding a space where you can express your feelings—like journaling or art—can also be a great outlet.
Sometimes, it’s the little things that can spark a memory—like a song or a particular type of food. When that happens, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but we can remind ourselves that these memories don’t define our present. Engaging in self-care practices that work for you—whether it’s a calming activity or just reaching out to check in with someone—can help create a buffer against those sudden memories.
Anyone else dealing with this? Would love to hear what triggers you and how you cope. Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference.
