The challenge of setting boundaries with family who don’t understand your past

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the struggle of setting boundaries with family who just don’t understand what we’ve been through. It can feel like we’re speaking a different language when we try to express our needs, and sometimes it feels like our past is invisible to them. We might be met with confusion or even dismissal, which can be incredibly frustrating and disheartening. One thing that’s helped me is to start small. Instead of diving into deep discussions about my past, I’ve found it useful to share specific, concrete examples of what triggers me or makes me uncomfortable. For instance, I once explained that certain family traditions remind me of my childhood experiences and leave me feeling overwhelmed. Sharing these specifics has sometimes opened the door to more understanding, even if it’s just a little bit. Another approach that many of us have tried is to establish clear boundaries around communication. This could mean letting family members know when we need space or when we're not ready to engage in certain conversations. I remember having a tough chat with my family where I said I needed time to process things before jumping into discussions. It wasn’t easy, but it helped them understand that my silence wasn’t rejection; it was self-care. Finding support from others who get it can also be a game-changer. I connected with someone who has a similar background, and we started chatting about our experiences with family. It was such a relief to share our frustrations and strategies together. Just knowing that someone else understands the complexity of these relationships can make it feel a little less lonely. Navigating these boundaries is tough, and it’s a journey that’s often filled with setbacks. But remember, we deserve to protect our peace. Anyone else dealing with family who just doesn’t get it? What’s been your experience in setting those boundaries? Sometimes just sharing can lighten the load a bit.
