How do you cope with anxiety in social situations without feeling like you're letting people down?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
We’ve all been there—standing at the edge of a social gathering, feeling the weight of expectations and the swirl of anxiety in our chests. Many of us experience that nagging fear of letting others down, especially when it seems like everyone else is managing just fine. But it’s important to remember that we’re not alone in this struggle, and there are ways to cope that honor our feelings without compromising our connections. One thing that helps me is preparing for social situations ahead of time. I often think about what I might say or how I’ll respond to common questions. This kind of mental rehearsal can ease some of the anxiety for many of us. It’s like giving ourselves a little script to follow, which can be comforting when we’re feeling overwhelmed. Plus, having a few conversation starters up my sleeve has made me feel more confident and less pressured to come up with something on the spot. Another approach that’s worked for some of us is giving ourselves permission to take breaks during social events. If the crowd feels too much, stepping outside for a few minutes or finding a quieter corner can be a game-changer. It’s so easy to feel like we’re letting others down by not being “on” all the time, but taking those little moments to recharge can help us show up as our true selves—anxious and all. I’ve found that when I finally opened up about needing space, others often responded with understanding, and it strengthened our connection. Many of us also find comfort in talking to someone who gets it before heading into a social situation. I’ve connected with a friend who shares similar experiences, and we often chat about our worries before an event. Just having someone to voice our fears to can alleviate some of the pressure we feel, reminding us we’re not alone in this. Sometimes the hardest part is just reaching out, but it can lead to some really meaningful connections. Anyone else dealing with this? How do you cope when anxiety creeps in during social gatherings? Sharing our experiences can really lighten the load.
