Navigating social situations when my anxiety feels overwhelming

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that sinking feeling when we think about heading into a social situation. That rush of anxiety can be overwhelming, making even the simplest gatherings feel like climbing a mountain. Whether it’s a party, a meeting, or just hanging out with friends, the pressure of expectations can really weigh us down. One thing that helped me was setting small, manageable goals before I even step out the door. Instead of telling myself I need to socialize for hours, I focus on just getting there and staying for a set amount of time. Sometimes, just committing to 30 minutes feels way more doable. You might find that once you're there, the anxiety eases up a bit, or at least you can leave knowing you tried. Another approach some of us try is bringing a buddy along. Having someone who understands our anxiety makes a huge difference. I remember one time I invited a friend who also deals with anxiety. We agreed to check in with each other throughout the event, and it made it feel less like an overwhelming task and more like a shared experience. Knowing that someone else gets it can really lighten the load. It’s also helpful to prepare for potential triggers. If crowds make your heart race, you might want to scope out the venue beforehand or find a quiet spot to retreat to if you need a break. Having a plan can give you a little sense of control. And remember, it’s totally okay to step away if things get too intense. Many of us have been there, feeling like we need a moment to breathe and regroup. Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it changes everything. Connecting with others who share these experiences can remind us we’re not alone in this. Anyone else dealing with the same anxiety before social events? What tricks have you found that help you navigate those overwhelming moments?
