How do you cope with anxiety during social gatherings, especially when everyone else seems at ease?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
We’ve all been there — standing at a social gathering, feeling like we’re on the outside looking in while everyone else seems to be effortlessly enjoying themselves. The laughter, the casual conversations, and the easy smiles can feel overwhelming when anxiety kicks in. Many of us know that sense of isolation, even in a room full of people. One thing that’s helped me during these moments is having a small buddy system. If you can find just one person who understands your anxiety, it can make all the difference. Before heading to an event, I usually check in with my friend who also gets it. We agree to stay close, and it’s comforting to know I have someone to turn to when the crowd feels a bit too much. Sometimes, just sharing a knowing look or a quick chat can ground us both in those anxious moments. Another strategy that’s worked for me is having an exit plan. It’s okay to step outside for a breather if you’re feeling overwhelmed. I usually tell my buddy that I might need a few minutes alone. Just knowing that I can take a break helps me feel more in control. Maybe you could even set a timer for a few minutes and give yourself permission to leave the gathering for a bit. It’s about finding those little ways to reclaim your space. Practicing some simple grounding techniques can also be super helpful in these situations. When the chatter gets too loud, I’ll focus on my breath or even take a moment to feel the texture of something in my pocket. It sounds simple, but it really helps me stay anchored. We know it’s not easy to calm those racing thoughts, but these small actions can help us feel a little more present. Does anyone else have tips or experiences to share when it comes to navigating social gatherings? Sometimes, just talking to someone who understands can change everything. What strategies have you found helpful?
