Navigating social situations where alcohol is the main event — how do you handle it?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
We’ve all been there, right? You walk into a party, and the smell of alcohol hits you before you even say hello. It can feel overwhelming, like everyone else is in on a secret that you're not part of. Many of us know that navigating social situations where alcohol is the main event can be really tough, especially when you’re trying to stay true to your recovery. One thing that’s helped me is to think ahead about how I can still enjoy the social aspect without feeling pressured to drink. I like to bring my own non-alcoholic drinks that I genuinely enjoy. Having a fancy soda or a mocktail in hand helps me feel included, and it gives me something to sip on when everyone is toasting. Plus, some people actually start asking about my drink, which opens up conversations that can lead to deeper connections. Another approach is to identify a buddy before heading into the event. If you can find even one person who understands your journey, it can make a world of difference. I found someone in my circle who’s also in recovery, and we agreed to look out for each other at gatherings. It’s comforting to know that, if things get too intense, I have someone to lean on. Setting boundaries is also crucial. It’s okay to step outside for a breather if you’re feeling overwhelmed. You might even want to plan an exit strategy in advance — knowing you have an out can ease some of that anxiety. You could also let the host know ahead of time about your situation; many people are more understanding than we think. The isolation that comes with sobriety can be daunting, especially in social settings that revolve around drinking. But remember, it’s absolutely okay to prioritize your well-being. Sometimes, just sharing a laugh with someone who understands can make all the difference. Anyone else feeling the pressure in social situations? What strategies have you found that help? Would love to hear what’s worked for you!
