Navigating family gatherings without feeling pressured to drink

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Family gatherings can be a mixed bag for many of us in recovery. On one hand, we want to connect and enjoy the time with loved ones, but on the other, the pressure to drink can feel overwhelming. It’s tough when everyone else seems to be toasting with a glass in hand, and we might feel like we’re missing out or being judged for not joining in. One thing that helped me navigate these situations was having a plan before I walked into the gathering. I started by choosing a non-alcoholic drink that I really enjoy, like sparkling water with a splash of cranberry juice. This way, I had something in hand that felt festive and kept the questions at bay. I even found that bringing a fun, non-alcoholic option to share with others made me feel more at ease and often sparked conversations about how delicious it was. Another approach that’s worked for many of us is being honest with family members. Sometimes, just letting them know ahead of time that you’re in recovery can take a lot of the pressure off. It might feel intimidating to open up, but many family members are supportive and will respect your choice if they understand where you’re coming from. I found that having even one person in the family who truly gets it made those gatherings much more comfortable. It’s also important to give ourselves permission to step away if things get too overwhelming. If you notice that the pressure is building or if you’re feeling triggered, it’s perfectly okay to excuse yourself for a few minutes. Taking a walk or finding a quiet spot can help regain your composure and remind you why you’re choosing sobriety. Anyone else dealing with this at family gatherings? It can be tough navigating those social pressures, but sometimes just talking to one person who understands makes a huge difference. What’s helped you feel more comfortable?
