How do you handle social gatherings where alcohol is present?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating social gatherings where alcohol is present can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us have experienced that mix of anxiety and longing — wanting to connect and enjoy the moment while also feeling the weight of our recovery. It’s tough, and it’s okay to acknowledge that. One thing that has helped me is preparing some go-to responses for when someone offers me a drink. I’ve found that having a few phrases ready can ease that awkwardness. Something like, “Thanks, but I’m good with my water tonight” can keep it light without diving into details. It’s amazing how a simple response can help us feel more in control and less vulnerable in those moments. Another approach some of us take is to scout out gatherings that have non-alcoholic options available. When I know there will be tasty mocktails or even just a solid selection of sodas, I feel less like I’m missing out. Plus, it can be a great conversation starter — “Have you tried that non-alcoholic beer? It’s surprisingly good!” Finding these alternatives helps to shift the focus away from alcohol and makes socializing a bit easier. Connecting with others in recovery during these events has also been a game-changer. I found a friend who understands these challenges, and we often go to gatherings together. Having someone there who gets it makes all the difference. We can lean on each other when those cravings hit or when someone brings up “just one drink.” It’s not always easy, and there are days when the pull of alcohol feels stronger than the desire to connect. But reminding ourselves of our reasons for staying sober can strengthen our resolve. Many of us have found that the joy of genuine connections far outweighs the temporary thrill of fitting in with drinks. Anyone else facing this challenge? How do you navigate social settings with alcohol around? I’d love to hear your experiences. Sometimes just sharing our stories makes the journey feel a little lighter.
