How do you handle social situations where alcohol is the focus?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating social situations where alcohol is the center of attention can be really tricky for many of us in recovery. It’s tough when everyone around you seems to be drinking and having a good time, while you’re just trying to stay grounded. We’ve all felt that pressure or even fear of judgment, and it can be isolating. One thing that’s helped me is to have a plan before heading into these situations. I usually tell myself what my boundaries are and stick to them. For example, I might choose to bring my own non-alcoholic drink that I genuinely enjoy. Having something tasty to sip on not only makes me feel included, but it also helps when someone offers me a drink. I can just say, “I’m good, thanks! I brought my favorite.” It’s amazing how a simple drink swap can change the dynamic. Another strategy is to identify a buddy in the group who understands my journey. Just knowing there’s someone else who gets it makes me feel more confident. I found someone nearby who’s also in recovery, and we’ve started supporting each other at these events. Having that connection has made it easier to handle the pressure. We even share little signals if one of us is feeling overwhelmed, which helps to navigate those tricky moments together. If you find yourself in a situation where the focus is on alcohol, it can also be helpful to steer the conversation in a different direction. Many of us have discovered that talking about hobbies, travel, or even our favorite shows can lighten the mood and shift the focus away from drinking. Plus, it’s a great way to bond with others over shared interests instead of the typical party chatter. Ultimately, it’s a journey, and we’re all figuring it out together. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear what strategies have worked for you in these social settings!
