How do you cope with ageism during the job search process?

Many of us have faced the sting of ageism during our job searches, and it can feel incredibly disheartening. When you’ve spent years building a career, it’s tough to suddenly feel like your age is a liability instead of an asset. We understand that pressure—whether it's a subtle bias in the interview room or an outright assumption that we might not be tech-savvy just because of our age.
One thing that helped me navigate this challenging landscape was reframing the narrative around my experience. Instead of focusing on the years I've spent in the workforce as a drawback, I started to highlight the depth of knowledge and perspective I bring to the table. When I crafted my resume, I made sure to include not only my roles but also the impact I had in those positions. Sharing stories of successful projects or mentoring younger colleagues helped to showcase that my experience is a valuable resource.
Another approach some of us try is keeping our skills current. Many of us took online courses or attended workshops in areas like digital tools relevant to our field. This not only boosts our confidence but also gives us concrete examples to discuss in interviews, proving that we’re eager to learn and adapt. Plus, it’s a great way to connect with others who are also navigating these changes and can share their tips or experiences.
Connecting with fellow job seekers who understand the specific challenges we face can also be a game changer. I found someone through a community group who was going through the same struggles—sharing our experiences and job leads made it feel less isolating. We even met up a couple of times to practice our interview skills, which made those tough conversations feel a bit more manageable.
If you’re feeling the weight of ageism in your job search, know that you’re not alone. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear what has helped you find strength and support during this journey.
