Navigating age bias in job interviews — has anyone faced this head-on?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating job interviews can feel like a minefield, especially for those of us over 50. Many of us have faced age bias head-on, and it often leaves us questioning our worth and capabilities in a world that seems to prioritize youth. It can be frustrating and disheartening when we’re told we have the experience but then encounter the subtle (or not-so-subtle) looks that say, “You’re too old for this.” One thing that helped me was shifting my focus from what I thought others might perceive about my age to showcasing the value I bring. Instead of hiding my years of experience, I’ve learned to frame my age as an asset. In interviews, I emphasize my adaptability and the depth of knowledge I’ve gained over the years. It’s important to highlight how our wealth of experience can contribute to a company’s success. Another approach that worked for me was connecting with others who are also navigating this challenging landscape. I found a few people in my area who have similar experiences, and we started meeting up regularly to share our stories and strategies. Just knowing there are others who understand the unique challenges we face made such a difference. We swap tips on how to handle tricky interview questions about age and even practice mock interviews together. I’ve also found that keeping up with trends in our industry helps combat any age-related bias. It shows potential employers that we’re not just resting on our laurels but are actively engaged in our field. Whether it’s taking an online course or attending a webinar, these efforts can help bridge the gap and show that we’re still in the game and ready to contribute. Anyone else facing age bias in job interviews? How have you navigated this? Sometimes just connecting with someone who understands what we’re going through can make all the difference.
