How do you handle rejection or age bias in the job search process?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating the job search process can feel like a rollercoaster for many of us, especially when we’re over 50. Rejection and age bias can sting deeply, often making us question our worth and capabilities. It’s a tough spot to be in, and many of us have felt that familiar pang of disappointment after an interview or when we don’t hear back from a potential employer. One thing that helped me was reframing rejection. Instead of viewing it as a personal failure, I started seeing it as a reflection of the company's fit rather than my worth. Many employers are missing out on the wealth of experience we bring, and that's their loss, not ours. Keeping this perspective can be difficult, but it’s empowering when we remind ourselves that we have so much to offer. Another approach some of us have found beneficial is focusing on our unique strengths. We’ve accumulated valuable skills and insights over the years — think about how many challenges we've navigated. Highlighting these in our resumes and interviews can help counter any age bias we might encounter. One tip is to tailor your application materials to each job, emphasizing relevant experiences that align with the job description. This way, we’re not just showcasing our age but our adaptability and continued relevance in the workforce. Connecting with peers who understand these challenges has been a game changer for many of us. I found a small group of fellow job seekers, and we meet weekly to share our experiences and support each other. Just having that space to vent and strategize together takes a lot of the weight off. If you can find even one person who gets it, it can make the journey feel less isolating. How are you handling rejection or age bias in your job search? Sometimes just sharing our stories can lighten the load — I’d love to hear what’s worked for you!
