Coping with the stigma of being Yenish — does it ever feel like you have to hide who you are?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know what it feels like to carry the weight of stigma surrounding our Yenish identity. It can be exhausting to navigate a world that often misunderstands or misrepresents who we are. There are days when hiding parts of ourselves feels like the only option, especially when faced with judgment or stereotypes that don’t reflect our true selves. One thing that has helped me is finding spaces where we can be open about our experiences. Engaging with fellow Yenish people, whether in person or online, has created a sense of belonging that feels like a breath of fresh air. Sharing stories and challenges with others who understand the nuances of our identity can make a huge difference. Many of us have found that just one conversation with someone who gets it can lighten the load. Another approach some of us try is focusing on educating those around us. When we encounter misconceptions or stereotypes, it can be empowering to share our perspective. This doesn’t mean we have to be the voice for our entire community, but even small conversations can chip away at stigma. In those moments, we might discover allies who genuinely want to understand our culture and history. It can also be helpful to celebrate our identity in private ways that feel safe. Whether it’s listening to Yenish music, reading literature from our community, or connecting with traditions that resonate with us, these acts can foster a sense of pride. These personal rituals often remind us that we have a rich culture worth celebrating, despite the stigma we might face outside our community. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear how you cope with the challenges of being Yenish and what has helped you feel more connected to your identity. Sometimes just sharing our experiences makes all the difference.
