How do you cope with the stigma of being Yenish in a predominantly non-Yenish community?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know how heavy the stigma can feel when we're navigating life as Yenish people in predominantly non-Yenish communities. It’s like walking through a world that often misunderstands or outright rejects us. We might feel isolated, carrying both our identity and the weight of others’ perceptions. One thing that helps me is finding small ways to celebrate our culture and identity, even when the world around us doesn’t recognize it. Whether it's sharing a traditional meal with family or practicing our crafts, these moments ground us in who we are. I’ve also started incorporating elements of our culture into my everyday conversations, even if it feels a bit daunting. It opens the door for discussions and can sometimes educate others, breaking down some of that stigma. Another approach is to connect with others who understand our unique experiences. I found someone in my area who also identifies as Yenish, and we began meeting regularly. Having someone to talk to about the challenges we face—like feeling judged or misunderstood—has made a huge difference. We share stories, support each other, and just vent about the little things that others might not get. It can also be beneficial to reflect on the strengths our culture brings. Many of us have rich traditions of resilience and community, and reminding ourselves of these strengths can help combat the negativity we sometimes face. Celebrating our history and contributions, even in small ways, helps us reclaim our narrative. Anyone else feeling the weight of this stigma? It’s tough, but connecting with even one person who truly understands can lighten the load. What are your experiences, and how do you cope? Let’s share and support each other in this!
