What small acts of resistance or self-care have helped you feel more empowered as an undocumented immigrant?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Being an undocumented immigrant can sometimes feel incredibly isolating, like we're carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders. Many of us experience that constant anxiety about our status and the fear of what could happen tomorrow. But there are small acts of resistance and self-care that can help us feel a bit more empowered in our daily lives. One thing that has really helped me is connecting with others in our community. Just sharing our stories and experiences can be such a powerful act of resistance. I found a small group of friends who also share our status, and we meet regularly to talk about everything from our dreams to our fears. Having that safe space where we can be vulnerable and lift each other up makes a world of difference. It reminds us that we are not alone in this journey. Another small act of self-care that many of us have found beneficial is setting aside time for our passions, even if it feels like a luxury. Whether it’s painting, dancing, or writing, engaging in creative outlets can serve as both a form of expression and a way to reclaim our identity. Whenever I take time to do something I love, I feel more connected to myself and less defined by my immigration status. It's like a little rebellion against the struggles we face every day. Many of us also practice mindfulness in small ways, whether through meditation, journaling, or just taking a moment to breathe deeply when the stress feels overwhelming. I started journaling about my experiences—writing down my thoughts and feelings has been incredibly cathartic, allowing me to process my emotions and reflect on what empowers me. Plus, it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come and the resilience we have within us. Lastly, I’ve learned that celebrating small victories, no matter how minor they may seem, is crucial. Whether it’s getting through a tough day at work or standing up for ourselves in a challenging situation, acknowledging these moments helps us feel more empowered. When we share these wins with others, it strengthens our bonds and reminds us that resistance can take many forms. Anyone else navigating these challenges? What small acts of resistance or self-care have empowered you? Sometimes just talking to someone who gets it makes all the difference.
