How do you handle fear or anxiety when it comes to possible deportation?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Fear and anxiety about deportation can feel like a heavy weight that we carry every day. Many of us know that constant knot in our stomachs, the way our heart races when we hear sirens or see a police car. It's a reality that shapes our lives in so many ways, and it's okay to acknowledge that it's hard. One thing that has helped me is finding a supportive community, whether that's friends who understand our fears or local groups that focus on undocumented issues. Just talking about our experiences can be a relief — it reminds us we’re not alone in this. I found a couple of people in my neighborhood who were going through similar situations, and we started meeting weekly to share our feelings and strategies. Having that connection made the hard days a little easier. Another approach some of us try is focusing on what we can control, even if it feels small. For instance, learning about our rights and resources can empower us. There are organizations that offer legal advice, and knowing what to do in case of an encounter with authorities can ease some of that anxiety. It’s not a fix-all, but having a plan can help us feel a little more prepared. Sometimes, we might also want to create a safety plan with trusted friends or family. This could be as simple as having a designated person to call if we’re feeling overwhelmed or if a situation arises. Knowing that we have a support system in place helps us manage that constant fear. We all have our own stories, and sharing them can be a powerful way to heal. Anyone else dealing with this fear? What has helped you cope with the anxiety of deportation? It’s comforting to know we can lean on each other.
