Many of us know that feeling when someone misgenders us in public. It can hit like a punch to the gut—an instant reminder of the disconnect between how we see ourselves and how others perceive us. This experience can be overwhelming, leaving us feeling vulnerable and frustrated.
One thing that has helped me is finding ways to respond that feel authentic to who I am. Sometimes, I choose to gently correct the person, saying something like, “Actually, I go by [insert preferred pronoun].” It’s not always easy, and I know it can feel risky in certain situations. But standing up for ourselves, even when it feels small, can help reclaim a bit of our identity in that moment.
Another approach some of us try is to focus on self-care afterward. It’s okay to take a moment to breathe and ground ourselves, especially in a public space where we might not feel safe or supported. I often take a few minutes to chat with someone who understands what I’m going through. Connecting with others who share similar experiences makes a world of difference. Just knowing we’re not alone can help ease the sting of being misgendered.
We might also find strength in community. Many of us have started to share our experiences more openly, whether that’s through conversations with friends, in support groups, or even online platforms. Sharing how we feel about being misgendered can create a sense of solidarity, reminding us that these experiences, while painful, are part of a broader narrative that we’re navigating together.
How do you handle being misgendered in public? Has anyone else found ways to cope that have worked for you? Sometimes just talking to someone who really gets it can make all the difference. Would love to hear your thoughts!
