How do you navigate the awkwardness of using the correct name and pronouns in social situations?

Navigating social situations can be really tricky when it comes to names and pronouns, especially when we’re in spaces where people might not know our journey. Many of us have felt that gut-wrenching moment when someone misgenders us or uses our old name, and it can really take the air out of the room. It’s like an unexpected jolt, right? But we can find ways to ease that awkwardness together.
One thing that has helped me is being open about my name and pronouns right from the start. When meeting new people, I’ve found it helpful to introduce myself with my chosen name and pronouns as part of the introduction. It sets the tone for the conversation and can prompt others to do the same. It’s a small act that can break the ice and help create a more inclusive environment. Plus, it gives us a chance to model what respect looks like.
Another approach some of us try is practicing gentle corrections. If someone misgenders me, I’ll calmly say something like, “Actually, I go by [chosen name] and use [pronouns].” It can feel awkward at first, but it’s often met with understanding. Many people appreciate the chance to learn and do better, and it can open up a dialogue about our experiences. I’ve even found that correcting someone can lead to deeper conversations about identity, which can be really fulfilling.
Finding connection with others who get it can also help. I started chatting with a friend who identifies similarly, and we often share our experiences navigating these situations. Having someone who understands the emotional weight of these interactions makes it easier to approach them with confidence. Sometimes, just knowing that someone else has your back can change how we experience those awkward moments.
Anyone else finding themselves in similar situations? How do you handle the name and pronoun awkwardness when meeting new people? It would be great to hear your experiences and what’s worked for you!
