How do you navigate cultural expectations while staying true to your Teli identity?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating cultural expectations while staying true to our Teli identity can sometimes feel like walking a tightrope, right? Many of us know the struggle of balancing what’s expected of us by our families and communities with our own desires and truths. It can get overwhelming, especially when it feels like we’re pulled in multiple directions. One thing that has really helped me is finding small ways to incorporate our Teli values into everyday life while respecting cultural traditions. For instance, during family gatherings, I’ve started sharing stories about my experiences that highlight our unique perspectives. It’s a way to keep our cultural roots alive while also educating those around us about what it means to be Teli. Many of us have found that these conversations can open up pathways for understanding and connection, even if they’re not perfect at first. Another approach I’ve tried is setting boundaries around certain expectations that don’t resonate with me. This can feel daunting, especially when it comes to family pressures. But we can start small—like saying no to a traditional event that feels overwhelming and instead suggesting an alternative that feels true to our identity. One of my friends and I even made a pact to support each other in these situations, and having someone who understands this struggle makes it so much easier to stand firm. Connecting with others who share our experiences can also be a game-changer. Many of us have found solace in forming small groups where we can discuss our challenges and celebrate our identities without judgment. It’s incredibly validating to hear someone else voice the same feelings of conflict between cultural expectations and our Teli identity. Just having that shared space makes the hard days feel lighter. Anyone else navigating this? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it can change everything — what’s been your experience with cultural expectations and staying true to your Teli identity?
