Do you ever feel like you have to apologize for your identity in social settings?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Have you ever found yourself in a social setting, feeling like you need to apologize for who you are? Many of us know that uncomfortable feeling all too well. It’s like we have to explain our identities, whether it’s our neurodiversity, mental health journey, or chronic illness, just to fit in. It can be exhausting and isolating. One thing that has helped me navigate these situations is reframing my mindset about my identity. Instead of viewing it as something I need to apologize for, I try to see it as part of what makes me unique. When I embrace my identity, I find that I’m more confident in conversations. For example, if someone asks why I seem a bit quieter or need to step away, I might share that I’m managing some anxiety. Often, this opens the door for deeper conversations and genuine connections with others who might be feeling the same way. Another approach some of us have found useful is to seek out those who understand where we’re coming from. Having even one person in your life who truly gets this can change everything. I found someone nearby who shares similar experiences, and we started meeting up regularly. It’s made those social gatherings feel less daunting because I know there’s someone there who understands the struggles we face. It’s like having a little support squad, and it takes some of the pressure off. It’s also okay to set boundaries. If a social event feels overwhelming, it’s perfectly fine to take a break or leave early. Many of us have learned that prioritizing our well-being is not only beneficial for us but can also inspire others to respect their own needs. Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just talking to one person who really gets it makes all the difference — I’d love to hear how you navigate similar situations!
