Navigating feelings of displacement when living in a settled community

Many of us in the Scottish Traveller Community know the feeling of being in a settled environment yet still feeling out of place. It’s like being surrounded by people but still feeling that gap, that sense of displacement that can be so isolating. We might find ourselves grappling with cultural differences, lifestyles that don't align with the settled way of life, and the longing for a deeper connection to our roots. One thing that really helped me was finding local gatherings that celebrate our culture. When I started attending events like ceilidhs or community markets, I began to meet others who share my experiences. We might not always live in traditional Traveller ways, but connecting with people who understand our history, our struggles, and our joys made the challenges feel a bit lighter. Just having a chat over a cup of tea with someone who gets it can make the world of difference. Another approach some of us try is to embrace our identity in our everyday lives, even in a settled community. This could mean sharing our stories, whether it’s through art, music, or simply discussing our traditions with those around us. It can be daunting, but when we express who we are, we often find others are curious and open-hearted. Plus, it helps build bridges and might even spark friendships with those who appreciate our unique perspectives. Sometimes, it’s about finding those small moments of connection. Whether it’s a friendly smile from a neighbor or a chat with someone who admires your way of life, these little interactions can ease that feeling of displacement. Many of us have found solace in knowing that we’re not alone in this; there are others out there navigating the same feelings, even if they come from different backgrounds.
