How do you navigate feelings of isolation when you’re part of the Scottish Traveller community?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Scottish Traveller community know all too well the feelings of isolation that can creep in, especially when our way of life sometimes feels misunderstood or marginalized. It can be tough when we seek connection but face barriers that make us feel like outsiders, even within our own culture. One way I’ve found to navigate these feelings is by connecting with others who share our experiences. I started reaching out to fellow Travellers through community gatherings, even if they were small. Sharing stories over a cup of tea or a meal reminds us that we’re not alone in this. It might feel daunting at first, but that sense of community can be incredibly uplifting. Even if those connections start small, like a chat at a festival or a message on social media, they can grow into something meaningful. Another approach that has helped me is finding ways to celebrate our culture together. Organizing or participating in events that highlight our traditions and stories can create a sense of pride and belonging. When we come together to share music, crafts, or food, it reinforces our identities and helps combat the loneliness that can sometimes come with being a Traveller. Plus, these activities can attract others who share our background, expanding our circle. Sometimes, it’s also helpful to simply acknowledge the isolation we feel and talk about it. I’ve had honest conversations with friends about the challenges we face, whether it's prejudice or the struggle for acceptance. Opening up about these feelings can be a relief and can lead to deeper connections with those who really understand what we’re going through. We all have different paths, but connecting with even just one person who shares our identity can make a world of difference. Anyone else navigating these feelings? What’s helped you find connection within our community?
