How do you navigate family expectations while trying to carve out your own path in life?

Many of us know the struggle of balancing our own dreams and aspirations with the deep-rooted expectations of our families. Growing up in the Scottish Traveller community, family ties run strong and traditions are often held close to our hearts. It can feel like a tug-of-war between honoring our heritage and carving out our own unique path. One thing that has really helped me is starting small conversations with family about my goals. It can be intimidating, but sharing even a little about what I want to pursue has opened doors to understanding. For instance, when I mentioned my interest in a different career path, I found that some family members were more supportive than I expected, sharing their own experiences of stepping outside traditional roles. Finding common ground allowed us to connect on a deeper level, which made it easier to express my desire to explore new opportunities. We might also find that creating space for ourselves within our community is essential. Maybe that means setting aside time to focus on our passions, even if it feels a little selfish at first. For example, I started dedicating a few hours each week to a hobby that truly resonates with me. It helped me realize that pursuing my interests doesn't lessen my connection to my roots; rather, it enriches my identity as a Traveller. Connecting with others who have similar experiences can also be incredibly validating. Even just one conversation with someone who understands the complexities of our culture can make a huge difference. Another approach some of us take is finding role models within our community. Seeing others who have navigated family expectations while still embracing their individuality can be so inspiring. Whether it’s someone who has successfully balanced tradition with a modern lifestyle or a family member who carved their own path, these stories can remind us that it’s possible to honor our heritage while still pursuing our dreams.
