Navigating the stigma of being a Scottish Traveller in everyday life

Many of us know what it feels like to carry the weight of stigma as Scottish Travellers. Whether it’s the sideways glances, the whispered comments, or the outright discrimination, navigating everyday life can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. It can be exhausting, but we’re not alone in this journey.
One thing that’s helped me is finding ways to embrace and celebrate our culture in a way that feels authentic to me. Sharing stories, traditions, and even food with friends or family can remind us of the rich history we carry. For instance, I started inviting a few close friends to join in some of our traditional celebrations. It not only opened their eyes to our way of life but also strengthened our bond. You might find that sharing a piece of your culture could foster understanding and make the stigma feel less heavy.
Another challenge many of us face is dealing with assumptions about our lifestyle. When people label us based on stereotypes, it can feel incredibly isolating. I’ve found that having even one person in your life who truly understands this struggle can make a world of difference. It’s been helpful for me to connect with other Scottish Travellers who get it — we’ve shared our experiences, frustrations, and even our dreams. Just knowing that someone else has faced similar challenges can lighten the load.
Sometimes, just standing tall in our identity can be a quiet act of resistance. I remember the first time I wore my traditional dress in a public setting. I felt nervous, but the support from my community encouraged me to embrace who I am. Many of us have had moments where we felt like we needed to hide parts of ourselves to fit in, but finding a community, even if it starts online, can empower us to be proud of our identity.
How about you? What experiences have you had with stigma, and how have you navigated them? Sometimes just talking to one person who understands makes all the difference. Let’s share our stories and support one another.
