Navigating conversations about my identity at work and what that feels like

Navigating conversations about our Sami identity at work can feel like walking a tightrope sometimes, can’t it? Many of us have experienced that mix of pride and anxiety when we think about sharing who we are. It’s such a vital part of our identity, yet it can also feel like a heavy burden to carry into the workplace.
One thing that has helped me is finding the right moment to share my identity. It often feels daunting to bring it up, especially in environments where our culture isn’t widely understood. I’ve started opening up in casual conversations, like when discussing cultural holidays or traditions. This way, I can gauge the comfort level of my colleagues without putting too much pressure on myself or them. Just mentioning the importance of reindeer herding or traditional Sami music can spark interest and create a safe space for deeper discussions.
Another approach that has worked for many of us is finding allies in the workplace. I found one person who is genuinely interested in learning about my Sami background, and it made a world of difference. We started having lunch together regularly, and those conversations not only helped me feel seen but also allowed me to share my experiences without fear of judgment. Sometimes, just having one person in your corner who understands part of your journey can help you feel less isolated.
However, it’s not always easy. There are times when I’ve encountered ignorance or even dismissive comments about my culture, which can be really disheartening. Those moments can make us question whether we should have said anything at all. But I remind myself that these conversations can be opportunities for education, even when they’re uncomfortable. It’s about planting seeds of understanding, even if it feels tough in the moment.
Anyone else navigating this tricky landscape at work? What’s been your experience with sharing your Sami identity? Sometimes just talking about it with someone who gets it can really help lighten the load.
