How do you navigate the feelings of being an outsider in the city while trying to fit in?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the feeling of being an outsider in the city, especially when we come from a rural background. It can be tough to navigate this new environment, where everything feels fast-paced and sometimes overwhelming. We might find ourselves longing for the familiarity of home, while also trying to fit in with the urban crowd. It’s a complex mix of excitement and loneliness. One thing that helped me was finding small communities within the city where I could connect with others who share similar experiences. Look for local meetups or events that focus on rural backgrounds or interests. I found a group of people who also moved from rural areas, and just sharing our stories made a huge difference. It felt like I wasn’t alone in this journey, and we started meeting up regularly to explore the city together, which made it feel a little less intimidating. Another approach some of us have tried is to embrace what makes us unique. Instead of trying to completely change who we are to fit in, we can celebrate our rural roots. Whether it’s cooking a traditional meal, sharing a favorite story from back home, or even just talking about the beauty of our hometowns, these little things can spark great conversations and help others see us for who we truly are. Plus, you might find that others are curious and interested in your background, which can lead to deeper connections. It’s also important to be patient with ourselves. Fitting in doesn’t happen overnight, and there will be moments of discomfort. Many of us feel that pressure to assimilate, but it’s okay to take our time and find our own pace. When I started to let go of that pressure, I found it easier to connect with others authentically. Anyone else navigating this feeling of being an outsider in the city? Sometimes just sharing our experiences can help us feel more at home. What’s been your journey like?
