Many of us know that feeling of being caught between two worlds—our rural roots and the expectations that come with living in a city. It can be overwhelming, right? We may find ourselves navigating social norms, career pressures, and even lifestyle choices that seem to clash with the values we grew up with.
One thing that really helped me was embracing my rural identity instead of trying to hide it. When I first moved to the city, I felt this pressure to fit in with my peers, who often had different experiences and expectations. But once I started sharing my background—like my love for farming or the tight-knit community I came from—I found that people were genuinely interested. It opened up conversations and helped me connect with others who appreciated my story, even if they didn’t share the same background.
Another approach some of us try is finding spaces where we can be our true selves, away from the urban expectations. This could mean joining a group focused on rural culture, or even just finding a few friends who understand the unique challenges we face. I met a couple of people who also have rural roots, and we started a small meet-up. Just having that support made navigating the city feel less isolating. It’s comforting to talk about the little things—like how different it feels to go from wide-open fields to crowded streets.
It’s also important to acknowledge the challenges that come with this duality. Many of us may feel judged for our rural backgrounds or struggle with imposter syndrome when we’re in urban settings. I’ve felt that, too. But embracing those feelings, and sharing them with others who get it, can be a huge relief. We can remind each other that it’s okay to feel torn and that our experiences are valid, no matter how different they might seem from our peers.
Anyone else feeling this tension between your rural roots and urban life? I’d love to hear how you navigate it—sometimes just connecting with someone who understands can change everything.
