How do you navigate the feeling of being an outsider in the city, especially in social settings?

Many of us know what it feels like to be an outsider in the city, especially when we’re from a rural background. The hustle and bustle can be overwhelming, and social settings often amplify that feeling of not quite fitting in. We might find ourselves in a room full of people, yet still feel isolated, like we’re watching from the sidelines instead of truly participating. One thing that really helped me was finding small groups of people who share similar backgrounds or experiences. There’s something comforting in connecting with others who understand the nuances of moving from a rural area to an urban one. Whether it’s sharing stories about the differences in pace, or laughing over the cultural shocks, these connections can make the city feel a little less daunting. I started attending meetups specifically for people from rural areas, and it made a world of difference. Just having that common thread made it easier to engage and feel less like an outsider. Another approach some of us try is to embrace the unique perspectives we bring to conversations. Sometimes we might feel pressure to conform to city norms, but sharing our rural experiences can actually enrich the dialogue. When we talk about our traditions or the slower pace of life, it can spark genuine interest and deepen connections with others. You might find that people appreciate the insights we offer, and it can help bridge the gap between different backgrounds. Navigating social events can still be tricky. We might experience anxiety when walking into a crowded space, unsure of how to start conversations or fit in. One strategy that works for many of us is to set small, manageable goals for each outing. Instead of trying to engage with everyone, we can focus on connecting with just one person. Sometimes just talking to someone who gets it can make all the difference. Anyone else feeling like an outsider in the city? Would love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you build connections.
