Navigating the expectations from family back home while living in the city

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the tug-of-war between the expectations from our families back home and the reality of living in the city. It can feel like we’re caught in a whirlwind sometimes, trying to balance our dreams with the traditions and hopes our families have for us. It’s a tough spot to be in, and it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. One thing that has helped me is setting boundaries with my family about what I can realistically achieve. For instance, when they ask me when I’ll settle down or if I’m planning to return, I try to share my current goals and the opportunities I’m pursuing in the city. This doesn’t always go smoothly, but over time, they’ve started to understand that my path is different, even if it’s not what they envisioned. Having these open conversations can be challenging, but it’s been a relief to express where I’m at. Another approach some of us find helpful is connecting with others who are navigating the same expectations. I recently met someone from a similar background, and it’s been comforting to share our experiences. We chat about our families’ hopes and the pressure we feel, and just knowing I’m not alone in this has changed everything. It’s like a little support group where we can vent and encourage each other. We also might find ourselves facing the guilt that comes with living away from home. It’s hard not to feel like we’re letting our families down when we don’t conform to their expectations. To combat this, some of us try to be proactive in maintaining our family ties. Regular video calls or sending updates about our lives can help bridge that gap. It’s a small way to show we’re still connected, even if we’re carving out our own path. Has anyone else felt this pressure? I’d love to hear how you balance your family’s expectations with your life in the city. It helps to know we’re all in this together!
