What are some everyday challenges you face that urban hukou holders might not understand?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the feeling of being caught between two worlds — the urban hustle and the rural roots that shape who we are. It can be tough to navigate life when our experiences as rural hukou holders often go unnoticed or misunderstood by urban hukou holders. One of the everyday challenges we face is access to resources. For instance, many of us might find it hard to get good job opportunities or quality education compared to those with urban hukou. We might have to work harder just to access the same benefits, and that can feel incredibly isolating. I remember talking to a friend who holds an urban hukou, and they just couldn't grasp why I had to travel so far for a job interview or why I felt so stressed about securing stable employment. It’s draining to explain our realities repeatedly, when we just want someone to understand. Another struggle we often deal with is the stigma that comes with our rural backgrounds. Many of us experience judgment or assumptions based on where we come from, which can affect our self-esteem and sense of belonging. I’ve had conversations with others in the community about how we sometimes feel like we have to prove ourselves or overachieve just to be taken seriously. Finding even one person who gets this struggle can be a game-changer — we can share our experiences, find support, and remind each other that we’re not alone in this. We also face the challenge of maintaining connections with family back home while trying to build a life in the city. Many of us might feel torn between our responsibilities to our families and the desire to forge our own paths. It can lead to feelings of guilt or confusion about where we truly belong. I’ve found that simply sharing these feelings with someone who understands can bring a sense of relief. Anyone else navigating these challenges? It would be great to hear your thoughts and experiences. Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference!
