How do you cope with the feeling of being an outsider in the city where you work?

Many of us know that feeling of being an outsider in the bustling city where we work. It can be overwhelming to navigate a new environment, especially when we have a rural hukou that can sometimes make us feel out of place. The noise of the city, the fast pace of life, and the often unwelcoming energy can make it easy to feel isolated, even while surrounded by so many people.
One thing that has helped me is finding small pockets of community within the city. There are often groups or meet-ups for people who share our experiences, whether it’s cultural events or local gatherings that celebrate rural roots. I found a local café that hosts monthly open mic nights where people share their stories, and it’s a great way to connect with others who might feel just as disconnected. Having even one person in your corner who understands the unique challenges of navigating life with a rural hukou can make a big difference.
Another approach some of us try is embracing the city while still holding on to our roots. I’ve started sharing my story and experiences with colleagues and friends, which has opened up conversations about where we come from and what that means. It’s surprising how many people resonate with those feelings of being an outsider, regardless of their background. Building those bridges can help us feel more at home in a place that often feels alien.
We might also find comfort in creating our own traditions that blend our rural upbringing with urban life. For instance, I’ve begun cooking meals that remind me of home and inviting coworkers to join. Sharing food is such a universal way to connect, and it’s a lovely way to spark conversations about our diverse backgrounds.
Anyone else dealing with this feeling of being an outsider in the city? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything. Would love to hear what’s helped you!
