Navigating family gatherings when you know some relatives don't accept your identity

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Family gatherings can be a rollercoaster ride for many of us in the queer community, especially when we know some relatives don’t fully accept our identities. It’s tough navigating those spaces where love and acceptance feel like they should be a given, but instead, we’re left bracing ourselves for awkward comments or outright rejection. One thing that really helped me was setting boundaries ahead of time. I started having conversations with family members I felt comfortable with, letting them know how much certain topics or comments affected me. For example, sharing my feelings about being misgendered or having my identity dismissed made a huge difference. Not everyone will understand, but it’s empowering to express what we need, and sometimes, having even one supportive family member in our corner can change the whole dynamic of the gathering. Another approach some of us try is having an exit plan. Whether it’s a code word with a friend or family member or just knowing you can leave if things get too overwhelming, having that safety net really helps. I've found that just knowing I can step away if a conversation takes a rough turn eases a lot of the anxiety leading up to these events. Plus, if you feel comfortable, it can be a great opportunity to connect with someone else at the gathering who might feel the same way. I’ve had moments where just sharing a look with another family member who gets it made the room feel a little less isolating. It’s also important to remember that we don’t owe anyone our stories. You might choose to share as much or as little about your identity as you feel comfortable with. For me, I’ve found that discussing my experiences in a way that feels authentic to me can shift the atmosphere. But if you’d rather just enjoy the food and the company and keep things light, that’s completely valid too. Anyone else navigating this tricky terrain? Sometimes just talking to one person who understands makes all the difference — I’d love to hear how you handle family gatherings!
