How do you navigate holiday gatherings with family who don't accept your identity?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Holiday gatherings can be a mixed bag for many of us in the queer community. While they can bring joy and connection, they can also feel heavy with the weight of family expectations and the fear of being misunderstood or rejected. Many of us have felt that anxiety creeping in as we think about facing family members who may not fully accept our identities. One thing that helped me navigate these tricky situations was setting clear boundaries before the gathering. I started communicating with my family about what topics were off-limits. For instance, I might say, “I’d love to catch up, but I’d appreciate it if we could avoid discussions about my personal life or who I’m dating.” This way, I felt more in control and could focus on the positive connections instead of dreading the potential conflicts. Another approach we've found helpful is creating a support system. If possible, try to bring a friend or partner who knows your family dynamics. Having someone there who understands your journey can be a comforting shield. Just knowing there’s someone who has your back can make those conversations feel less daunting. If you can’t bring someone along, connecting with a friend virtually during the gathering can also help ground you. Finally, it’s okay to take breaks during family events. If you start feeling overwhelmed, stepping outside for a breath of fresh air or finding a quiet room can help you recharge. We might even find it helpful to have a little mantra or reminder we can repeat to ourselves, something like, "I am valid, I am loved, and I deserve to be here." Sometimes, just sharing a laugh or a moment of joy with someone who gets it can make all the difference in these scenarios. Anyone else navigating the holiday season with family who don’t fully accept you? I’d love to hear what strategies have worked for you.
